For generations, life in the little timber town of Hemingway, Oregon, situated in God's Valley in the Coast Range mountains, had remained unchanged. But, in the summer of 1998, protests over a clear-cut logging operation on Federal lands escalates into violence, eco-terrorism and cold blooded murder.

The loggers, led by Tanner Logging Company owner, Harry Westmoreland, and his ramrod, Baldy Hartman, are prepared to go to war with the eco-terrorists. Unless they can log the Elk Horn Unit, Tanner Logging will go bankrupt. To get the job done, they hire Hippie John Taylor, the best damned timber cutter in God's Valley, and his partner to start laying trees on the ground in a hurry. But, Westmoreland must also deal with his son, Brian, and his college friends, who are definitely on the side of the protestors.

Behind the scenes, powerful forces seemed to be calling the shots, as the protestors somehow know exactly what the loggers are planning almost before they do themselves, effectively countering their every move.

Meanwhile local TV reporter, Dominique Larrew, sees her own exploitation of the confrontation as the key to advancing her flagging career. She will go to almost any lengths to inflate the story.

Enter into the mix, County Sheriff Raymond Spencer, a native son of Hemingway and a man with one foot on either side of the dispute. Calling on all his investigative skills, his lifelong friendships and his plain gut instincts, Spencer must do what he can to keep a lid on the violence and solve not one, but two senseless, brutal and somehow connected murders in time to save a way of life in God’s Valley.
